Whatever hobby you have, keep at it. A little study suggests that having a creative outlet outside the office might help people perform better at work.
Scientists found that the more people engaged in their hobbies, the more likely they were to come up with creative solutions to problems on the job. And no matter what the hobby was, these people were also more likely to go out of their way to help workers.
"We found that in general, the more you engage in creative activities, the better you'll do," says Kevin Eschleman, a professor.
The researchers surveyed about 350 people with a variety of hobbies about what they did in their free time and also asked about their behavior at work. The researchers also surveyed a group of 90 US Air Force captains. They knew that these folks were already trained to solve tough problems, and help others—so they wanted to see if having a bobby affected their performance in any way. It turned out that for both groups, having a creative outlet improved work performance.
Eschleman says, he thinks that behaviors at work and home strengthen each other. "It's very possible that those who are performing better at their jobs also have more energy to pursue these creative activities," he says. And, in turn, joining in creative activities may help people feel more energized and engaged at work.
And while the paper doesn't discover how or why your weekend forays in the wonderful world of soap-making might help your professional life, Eschleman says it's likely because hobbies can help people learn more about their own strengths and weaknesses. "Creative activities really can provide you the opportunity to learn something new about yourself."
Hobbies can also provide an escape from everyday stresses. "You're using that time to recharge," he says.
So bosses should encourage employees to take up hobbies. Maybe even consider encouraging workers up for a pottery class.
Banging the keys in disappointment, I turned away from the piano, trying to fight the tears in my eyes. After an hour practicing, I still couldn't get the rhythm quite right on a Mozart piece that I had to present to my piano teacher the following day. To me, the piece had at first seemed fairly easy, and had a pretty simple melody. But, no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't seem to play it in the way that it was supposed to be played.
I decided to take a break, and come back to the piece later, when I had calmed down .For the most part, after a little bit of work, I could usually learn the song pretty quickly—however, it was always that one song, which might have appeared simple but was deceptively difficult, that always got to me. These types of songs always made me doubt myself as a pianist —if I couldn't get this song right, would I be able to learn harder songs?
After having dinner, I decided to come back to the piano. Placing my fingers tentatively on the keys, I chose to play the piece slowly and carefully, focusing on hitting the correct notes instead of trying to play the piece quickly. Using this new method of practicing, I exercised a great deal of patience, something that I often have trouble with. Instead of focusing on how hard the rhythm was, I focused on how I could slowly see myself getting better.
That evening, I didn't even get the rhythm right until a week later. But, I learned an important lesson —sometimes, baby steps are the best way to reach goal. I'm an impatient person who likes to think that I can get somewhere by taking leaps and bounds. But, in the case of piano, I couldn't improve until I slowed down, believed in myself, and took it one step at a time.
A. Never fear failure B. Live a more active life C. Make better plans D. Wishes towards the future E. Find the right friend F. Be patient to everyone |
Life is filled with regrets. Anyone around you will have no difficulty in telling his regrets. As we get older, we look back and wish that we had made better choices. What can we do to avoid future regrets?
If you start to do something, you need to make a plan before doing it. The earlier, the better. You will know what comes first and what comes last. You'll also know what you should do and what you shouldn't do. When changes happen, you can have more time to deal with them.
You can go around more often. More outdoor activities can keep you relaxed and active. You also need to be kind. "Thank you" can bring a smile to someone's face. Learn to say "sorry" and don't be angry with others.
A friend may make your life and her or she can break your life as well. So you need to think twice when you choose a friend. Good friends will always give you better ideas. When you get into trouble, ask others for help. That little help may get you good results.
Everybody fails. Even the greatest person failed. We should not fear failure, because failure is not the end of the road. We must take failure as a chance to learn and improve ourselves.
Life is good. We don't have to live in our past, but we do hope that we can plan better, live better and work better when we have the chance to do so.
