Lena has been to Antarctica(南极洲). Here is a page from her. |
Tuesday December 2 We planned to go to Rothera that morning. We'd be staying there for the next two weeks. Because Antarctica is the windiest place on the Earth, sometimes you can't fly at all. We bad a nervous wait over breakfast to find out if we'd be leaving that day. People have to stay in Stanley for weeks while the pilots wait for good weather. It turned clear at 9:30 and we took off at 1C:30 on a little red plane called Dash-7. But even when we were in the air, there was still a chance we wouldn't be able to fly the whole day. |
Wednesday December 3 After waking up in the Antarctic for the first time today, I can understand why everybody who comes here falls in love with the place. It is really beautiful. We're staying at Rothera Survey base with mountains of ice all around. It's about minus 2℃ today, which for me is very cold, but the regulars(常容)here are often seen walking around in T-shirts! |
Thursday December 4 I woke up to another beautiful sunny day here in the Antarctic. I'm told it's a bit solder today, about minus 5℃, but it's not very windy so it feels warmer. Those of us who are new to the base have to do a special training course before we're allowed to go off the base to other stations or to go snowboarding over the nearby hill. |
Saturday December 6 Not a cloud in the sky and it's warm enough to sit outside (in a jacket). The most amazing thing about this place is how the scenery changes every day. At first I thought I was going mad. I'd step outside in the morning and think, "I'm sure that big mountain of ice wasn't there yesterday. " It's because the sea ice is always moving-slowly thankfully! |
Long ago, everything on the Earth was asleep. Nothing moved. Nothing grew. (One day the Rainbow Serpent(彩蛇)woke from her sleep and came out from under the ground.
She travelled a long way but finally got 2 because she was alone and so she returned to the place where she had first appeared, and called to the frogs. "Come out!"
The frogs appeared one by one. It was difficult for them to move forward because stomachs were 3 water, which they had stored in their sleep. The Rainbow Serpent tickled(挠疼)the frogs and, when they 4 , water ran all over the Earth and that is how lakes and rivers were formed.
Because there was water, all the animals 5 , and the grass and trees grew. The animals followed the Rainbow Serpent across the land. They were happy. Each lived and collected food with other animals of the same kind.
At first, all the animals behaved well, but some started making 6 , and so the Rainbow Serpent made rules that they all had to obey.
The Rainbow Serpent said, ""Those who obey my rules will get a reward(奖贫). I will turn them into humans. Those who don't obey my rules will be punished(惩罚)and turned into stone, and will never be able to on the Earth again. "
The bad animals became stone and turned into mountains and hills, and those who obeyed the rules were turned into humans, and lived with others of the same kind happily on the Earth.
In 2016, three scientists from France, Britain and the Netherlands won the Nobel Prize in chemistry. They made the world's smallest machines, which are m thinner than hair.
The invention will open a w new world for us. Here's an example. When we get sick, we go to the hospital and have lots of tests. The doctor needs to find out w we are sick. Thanks to the Nobel Prize winning research, doing that will be easier in the future. A doctor could put a tiny robot into our body. It could s for the illness and send the medicine right there.
And the winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine was from Japan. He also looks at small things. He has found that cells can break down the old ones and use the useful parts to make new cells. or f off viruses(病毒). How smart our body is!The Japanese scientist also gave some s to the young people, "Not all can be successful in science, but it's important to rise to the challenge."
Today, people are using and abusing(滥用)their eyes more than 二people were 20 years ago. There are fewer and fewer people who have? those bright, shiny and happy baby eyes. Most people, especially young people, have tired eyes with black circles around them because they look at the computer screens or play with mobile phones for too long. Here are some simple tips on taking care of your eyes:
Make sure you wash your eyes with cold water at least twice a day. This helps keep your eyes healthy and clean.
If your eycs feel tired after looking at the computer or mobile phone screcn, spread some ice to your eye and keep it there at least 3-5 minutes, and you will find the burning fecling is gone.
Give your eyes a rest and keep at least two days in a week when you don't touch the computer, and this will help repair and refresh your eyes.
Whenever you are outdoors, make sure you are protecting your eyes from bright sunlight and strong winds.
Have enough sleep. Some people need 8 hours' sleep while others feel 6 hours is enough. It depends on you. After you have a good sleep, dark circles around your eyes may reduce and your eyes will feel fresh.
These ways above are helpful and you will feel relaxed and look attractive with bright, shiny and fresh eyes.
