    One day a young man Gary asked his father why he wasn't able to reach all of his goals. With a smile，his father listened1Gary's story and told him，"Come to help me boil a kettle（水壶）of water!"

    "At first, you set too many goals," said his father. "It's just like the large kettle full of water. You didn't have enough wood，10 you couldn't boil the water. If you want to make the water boil，then you will have to either pour some out or prepare more wood!"

    Mr. Black decided to know more about the different jobs of his students' parents. But some of students were laughing as he talked with Mary. Betty shouted, "Mary's father is a garbageman!"Then everybody in the class laughed out loud. Mary felt her face tum red.

    "Be quiet! Stop laughing!"Mr. Black said," It is difficult but useful to be a garbageman. We should all be thankful to Mary's father."

    Mary's father came to walk her home from school as usual, but she didn't run up to him the way she always did. When they got back home, Mary went to her room and cried for a long time. Her father came into her room, "What happened? Why are you so sad?"

    Mary told her father what happened and looked at him sadly. He didn't seem angry or hurt, "Well." He said," They are right. Being a garbageman is a dirty job. Tomorrow's Saturday. Come to work with me, Mary."

    Mary wrinkled her nose because of the bad smell. "Don't worry. In five minutes you won't smell a thing." said her father.

    Everybody there was working hard, and they seemed to have a good time. Mary's father handed her a pair of gloves and told her to get the little plastic bags and throw them into the truck.

    It was fun, but also hard work. At last, no more garbage was left and Mary felt very proud and happy.

    "Garbage makes us uncomfortable and unhealthy but when we clear it away, everything is nice and clean. You can make yourself happy only by making others happy."

    Mary gave her dirty, smelly garbageman daddy a big kiss because she regarded him as an unselfish man. Now whenever someone asks Mary what her daddy does, she says, "He is a garbageman! Everyone makes garbage, but my daddy takes it away!"

    SUMMER ART CLASS: DRAWING

    I will be offering Drawing as a summer art class, you will learn the basic skills for good drawing, such as drawing basic forms and composition. Each student will complete his or her own art work.

    Is there a way to quickly remember information just before taking an exam? Walking backwards might be a way to solve this problem. Scientists from the University of Roehampton in the UK said this activity can help people improve their short-term memory.

    Researchers asked 114 volunteers to watch a video. After watching the video, volunteers were divided into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 metres forward. The second group walked 10 metres backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked 20 questions about what they saw in the video.

    The scientists found that the backward—walking group got two more, answers correct on average than the other groups.

    This suggests that the relationship between the concepts(概念) of time and space is important considering how our minds form memories. "Time is really expressed via(通过）space,"Aleksandar Aksentijevic, who led the study, told The Daily Mail. When you walk backward, you see things from a different way compared to walking forward. This difference helps people recall things that happened in the past.

    And walking backward is not just good for our brains. It is also good for the rest of our body. Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging. This can ameliorate our health, according to New Scientist, Walking backward uses more energy in a short time and burns more calories.

    Besides, walking backward is less stressful for our knees. It could.be helpful for people who often have pain in their knees, according to researchers from the Unegon in the US. Walking backward also keeps our spines（脊柱） strong, which can help to reduce pain in the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backward.

    In Japan, the latest time—saving invention is a dog-washing machine. Dog owners can buy one for their dogs. They can save time by putting their dogs in the machine and then 33 minutes later, a clean, fresh-smelling dog comes out.

    The machine becomes more and more popular. The sales of the dog-washer are increasing. The machines save a lot of money for pet owners. However, it's bad news for pet hospitals because they are losing many customers.

    The washing machine has many advantages. First, the whole cleaning process includes a shampoo（洗发）, rinse（冲洗） and blow-dry. Second, tests showed that dogs enjoyed the wash and were very happy when the blow-dryer started working. Third, the most important is that the makers of the machine say it's very safe and does not harm dogs in any way.

    One dog-owner, Michiko Kobayashi, loves her new machine. She said her dog was happy, too. Michiko explained to the reporters, "Before I bought my washer, I only took my dog to the pet hospital a few times a year. Now, I wash her every week and she looks great. I also save a lot of money. "

    It is welcomed by most people who raise dogs. And it takes over the market quickly. What a beautiful invention!

    Chinese New Year begins in late January      early February. It is one of the      (great) festivals in China.
