The Double Ninth Festival

    The Double Ninth Festival is a traditional (传统的) Chinese festival. It usually comes in October.

    On this day, people usually go on an outing or climb mountains. Sometimes they go to see flower shows. People eat Double Ninth cakes at this festival. The cakes are sweet(甜的) and nice.

    It's also a festival for old people. On this day, people go to see their parents and grandparents. Many students(学生) visit old people in Old People's Homes. They get together and have a good time.

    A man goes to a restaurant and sits down at one of the tables. A waiter comes up to him and gives him the menu(菜单). The man reads it carefully, then he orders(定购) all the most expensive dishes.

    Then a little boy comes into the restaurant and sits at the man's table.

    The waiter comes up and says to the man, "What will your little boy like, sir?"

    "Oh, just an ice cream," the man tells him. After he finishes his meal, the man stands up and says to the waiter, "I'm just going out to buy a newspaper."

    He leaves the restaurant. The waiter gives the boy an ice cream. The boy eats it, and then stands up and walks to the door.

    The waiter runs towards him.  "Excuse me," he says, "but your father hasn't come back and he has not paid for his meal or your ice cream. You'd better stay here until your father comes back and pays (付款 ) his bill ( 账单)."

    "He's not my father," the boy says. "The man came up to me in the street and asked me if I liked ice cream. I told him I did. Then he told me to come into the restaurant at 2 o'clock and sit down at his table. He said he would give me one."
