If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into an intelligent(聪明的) person.
A team of scientists from Ohio State University did tests on 33 volunteers who were getting better from heart problems following operation(手术). They found that people who exercised while listening to "The Four Seasons" did much better on language ability tests than without music.
"Facts suggest that exercise improve the learning ability of people with heart problems," said the scientist Charles Emery, who led the study. "And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together." he added.
The volunteers said they felt better after exercising with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have shown it is true that music can be good for health. It helps cut down stress, sadness and nervousness. And it also wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.
In medical fields, music is used widely for patients who have had headaches before and after operation. "The Four Seasons" was used because of its soft tempo(节拍) and better results in earlier research.
"Exercise seems to cause better changes in the nervous system and these changes may have a direct result on learning ability." Emery said. Scientists have been studying the result of music on understanding since the early 1950s. By 1990, scientists were using Mozart's music to help children with speech disorders. Mozart was chosen because his music is not overexciting. A study showed students who listened to Mozart scored higher marks in an intelligence test. With important exams coming, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.
"I hate school, and I'm not going back!" Have you ever had that thought? Lots of kids have had. Usually this feeling doesn't last long. But what if you feel this way too much?
A kid who feels stressed about school might have headaches or stomachaches. Having trouble sleeping is also a sign of stress. And if you're not getting enough sleep, you probably feel tired during the day. Feeling tired can make your school day even worse.
Sometimes it's a problem with your classes and schoolwork. Maybe the work is too easy and you get bored. Or maybe the work is too hard, or you don't feel as clever as the other kids. You may be getting farther and farther behind, and feel that you will never catch up with others. Only when you know why you don't like school, you can start taking steps to make things better.
It's a good idea to talk to someone about your problems at school. Your mom, dad, friends, teachers, or even classmates will be able to help you.
Another good idea is to write down your feelings about school. For example, keep a diary or just write in a notebook. It's a great way to let out bad feelings.
The next time you find yourself disliking school, this will also help you: Make a list of everything you dislike or enjoy—even there is only one thing. See what you can change on "don't like" list. Concentrate on what you can change and you might be able to put the good feeling back in school!
The dog meat-eating festival will be held on June 21 in Yulin, Guangxi, when more than 10,000 dogs will be killed and served at table and enjoyed by dog meat eaters.
The dog meat-eating festival in Yulin is only a local tradition, to celebrate summer's coming.
The fight over the festival shows different ideas between traditional habit and the modern idea of animal protection. While some persons want to continue local traditions, animal lovers want to stop festivals like Yulin's because they believe dogs, as man's best friends, should not be killed for food.
Perhaps they should learn from the example set by South Korea, a country that has a much longer eating tradition of eating dog meat. Back in 1988, when Seoul would host the Olympic Games, animal lovers from some countries asked South Korea to stop eating dog meat. To keep a balance between South Korea's love for dog meat and some foreign countries' and animal lovers' demand(要求), the South Korea government made restaurants sell dog meat in far away areas.
In China, there are no rules on saving dogs, so giving up the dog meat-eating festival will not be a good way to solve the problem. It requires time to encourage people in Yulin to change their eating habit. But animal lovers should respect other people's choice of food in this great country of more than 50 ethnic(民族的) groups.
But it is also important for people who eat dog meat to understand animal lovers' demand. The local government in Yulin could use the South Korea example to at least control the number of dogs killed before summer comes and cut down the bad social influence of the festival.
