I used to think that courtesy(礼貌)was a thing of the past because seldom had I met a young man who was as kind and polite as older generations. However, a recent experience changed my1.
Several weeks ago, I went to a coffee shop with my two2. There were too many people there and we had to go up to the second floor to find a(n)3table.
After enjoying our coffee, we walked to the staircase(楼梯)which was not wide enough so there was hardly any4for another person to either climb up or come down. It was impossible for two people to walk side by side.
Just as I was in the middle of the stairs, a young man5the coffee shop through the main entrance which was right in front of the staircase. It seemed that he wanted to go6.
I was sure that I would be pushed 7aside by this young man. I thought he would climb the stairs8. I kept going down as fast as I could, holding on to the banister(扶手). My two daughters were already down. They looked up at me, hoping I would reach them9 the young man walked up the stairs.

I told my daughters about it and13felt good. We did not even thank the gentleman who had14to let us come down first and held the door open for us before he hurried to go upstairs.
It is hard to find such15young people these days, with so much jostling(推挤)and pushing all around us. I still remember this young gentleman and hope that our younger generations will be as courteous as him.

Alice was getting very tired. She was sitting with her sister by the river and her sister was reading a book. Alice had nothing to do. Once or twice she looked into her sister's book, but it had no pictures or conversations in it. "And what is a book for," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversation?"
So she was thinking of making a daisy chain(雏菊花环)when suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran by her.
There was nothing strange about that. And she didn't think it was strange when she heard the rabbit say, "Oh dear! Oh dear! I'll be late!" But when the rabbit took a watch out of its pocket and looked at it, Alice got up. A rabbit with a pocket and a watch? She ran across the field after it. She saw it go down a large rabbit hole under the hedge(树篱笆).
Then Alice went down after itand never thought about how she was going to get out again.
Charles sat in the cafeteria with five other students, waiting for Ms. Swanson to interview all of them. Ms. Swanson, the seventh-grade science teacher, was looking for a lab helper. Charles's hands were wet and his face felt hot. He wondered if his face was red—and if anyone would notice.
As he prepared for his interview, Charles reviewed a set of index(索引)cards with notes that he made earlier. On each card, he had written an answer to a question that Ms. Swanson might ask.
"The eyewash station is not a place to get a drink of water," he quietly read from one card.
Charles decided to check out the other candidates(候选人). Nearby, a girl with dark red hair was mixing her own set of index cards. He watched as she tore(撕碎)a card into tiny pieces and put the pieces into a pocket. Suddenly she looked up at Charles. "Are you nervous?" she asked.
"No, I'm not nervous—not at all," Charles stammered(结巴). "What about you?"
"Uh, no, me neither," the girl answered.
At that moment, Ms. Swanson appeared. "Charles Locke?" she called out.
If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into an intelligent(聪明的)person.
A team of scientists from Ohio State University did tests on 33 volunteers who were getting better from heart problems following operation(手术). They found that people who exercised while listening to "The Four Seasons" did much better on language ability tests than without music.
"Facts suggest that exercise improve the learning ability of people with heart problems," said the scientist Charles Emery, who led the study. " And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together. " he added.
The volunteers said they felt better after exercising with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have shown it is true that music can be good for health. It helps cut down stress, sadness and nervousness. And it also wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.
In medical fields, music is used widely for patients who have had headaches before and after operation. "The Four Seasons" was used because of its soft tempo(节拍)and better results in earlier research. "Exercise seems to cause better changes in the nervous system and these changes may have a direct result on learning ability." Emery said.
Scientists have been studying the result of music on understanding since the early 1950s. By 1990, scientists were using Mozart's music to help children with speech disorders. Mozart was chosen because his music is not overexciting. A study showed students who listened to Mozart scored higher marks in an intelligence test. With important exams coming, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.
