(1)When I was only 3 years old, my mother taught me to memorize and recite poems. She was my first teacher of the arts, and my father was the first to appreciate my performance. Even at that young age, I had a simple understanding of how art and culture affect us as human beings and how we can connect to each other through the arts, which shapes my life to this day.
When I was growing up, my parents supported my interest in taking acting classes and doing community theater. Their faith in me and the professional(专业的)training I was getting from my theater teachers gave me a sense of purpose and a sense of self-confidence. I learned what artistic achievement actually was and what hard work the business was. While many people see the rosy picture to our business, I was really learning what it would require for me to become a professional.
I became an actress, but arts education isn't just about preparing our young people for a job in the arts. I recently talked to some of the kids attending theater education. Some of them want to work in theater, and some don't. They are learning not only theater skills, but also about the world around them. They learn about discipline(纪律)and hard work and what's required and what they have to do to bring themselves to the work. They learn how they can be of service in the world through the arts. They learn how to work with a team. By studying the arts, these students are open to worlds and lives that they might not have any other way of knowing about or any other way to connect with in their lives the way they are right now.
These young people are our future. We are passing the torch to them. And I think that's one of the most important reasons why we need to foster(培养)the arts.

I was lucky to serve as an RA(宿舍协管员)for two years at Manhattanville College, which has students from more than 50 countries. I talked with a lot of students who had trouble living in a dorm room.
Make your room as YOU as possible. It's your HOME. Show your style. Put up the posters your mom never let you put up at home. Do whatever you can to make your room a comfortable place so you'll feel right at home.
A clean room is a happy room. Cleanliness is important whether you share a room with one person or seven. Thus, your room will be always clean.
Snack time is the best time. Some colleges have dining 24 hours a day, while others offer no food after midnight. Have snacks on hand because you'll get hungry during those late-night homework adventures. Try healthy snacks such as fruit and yogurt. And remember the Freshman 15 doesn't apply only to freshman.
The key to getting along well with others is communication. If there's a problem, ALWAYS talk it out with your roommate first. If you still have problems after talking, turn to your RA for help.

When Jenny Brown, 10, developed bone cancer, her right leg below the knee was cut off to save her life. During the treatment, Jenny had a cat named Boogie, which seldom left her side as she got used to life with a prosthetic(义肢)leg. “My relationship with Boogie showed me animals think, feel, and suffer as we do,” says Jenny, now 44.
In 1994, Jenny graduated from college and began her film career in television. She also volunteered for animal rights groups. In 2002, having learned about some shocking mistreatment of farm animals, she knew she needed to help them. A year later, Jenny gave up her job to work as an animal caregiver at Farm Sanctuary(农场动物庇护所).
The next year, she opened the Woodstock Farm Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization aiming to rescue farm animals and help them recover. It gives tours of the farm from April to October and asks for volunteers and support through www.woodstockfarm.sanctuary.org. The farm website describe the backstory and the character of each of the animals living there.
In September, 2016, the sanctuary was moved to a new farm, which has an equipped kitchen, a dining hall and other buildings in High Falls, New York. The new place has allowed her team of 17 to host vegan(素食的)cooking classes and a kids' camp.
