    This morning I got an e-mail from Roy. It seems that my boy really enjoys his new life at Harvard University.  The 1 made me think of the first day when we moved into this house.

    Little Roy ran around the new house with great excitement and tried to move his own things into the house such as his toys, books and clothes. 2 , his little hand knocked over（打翻）a bottle of paint on the shelf.     “Cool” is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings. “Cool” can be used to express feelings of interest in almost everything.

    When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say. “It's cool.” You May think, “He's so cool,” when you see your favorite football player.

    We all maximize(扩大)the meaning of “cool”. You can use it instead of many words, such as “new” or “surprising”. Here's an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her student to write about the waterfall(瀑布) they had visited. On the student's paper was just the one sentence, “It's so cool.” Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.

    But the story also shows a scarcity(缺乏)of words. Without “cool”, some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility(可信度).Can you think of many other words that make your life as colorful as the word “cool”? I can. And I think they are also very cool.

    How green are you ? Do you know how to be green?

    We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waste every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you.

    Reduce

    Reduce means “use less”. Don't waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think whether it is really necessary—or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.

    Reuse

    Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should look after them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don't use a paper cup or a paper bag. It's better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.

    Recycle

    Recycle means “change things into something else”. Though it takes energy(精力) to change something into something else, it's better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighborhood and take part in recycling programmes. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.

So please remember these three words： reduce, reuse and recycle.

    “If you want to see a thing well, reach out and touch it!”

    That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better. Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass is. When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it.

    With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too. You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like to feel the sounds of music.

    All children soon learn what “Don't touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we touch things we might buy, such as food, clothes and so on. To see something well, we have to touch it.

    The bottoms of our feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a bad floor. All feel different under your feet.

    There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin. At first, it is not easy to feel these things. You are too used to them!

    Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show.

    If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you'll really see!

    Moms take care of their children and dads bring home food and make the family rules. These are the roles moms and dads fall into when they become parents and it's common among all cultures. But times change and parents' roles seem to be changing，too. More women are bringing home food by having full­time jobs and men are taking care of their children at home.

    Chinese TV show Where Are We Going，Dad provides a closer look at the changing roles of dads in modern family life. The show follows the adventures (冒险经历) of five celebrity (明星) dads who take trips with their young children (aged 4 to 6) and try to complete a set of tasks. It shows how young dads are trying hard to find the best way to raise（养育）their children and keep a closer relationship with them. Young dads no longer want to be cold.

    Psychologists (心理学家) say that a strong fatherly influence is important in a child's development. Fathers teach their children skills and encourage them to try new things. They also give them a sense of safety. A child learns that if something goes wrong，he or she can depend on dad to help fix it. The psychologists also say that without a dad，a child is more possible to drop out of school and get into trouble.

    A mother's love is important，and so is a father's love. Chen Mo，a psychology professor says，“It takes both parents to raise a child. Children have different needs at different ages and this needs to be considered  by both parents.”

    On September 19, Alibaba went public (上市) on the New York Stock Exchange(纽约证券交易所). It shows that Ma Yun has done his business successfully. A short Chinese man seems to be the tallest man in the world right now. Ma used to be an English teacher. So far, he has become the richest man on the Chinese mainland.

    Ma was born in Hangzhou and grew up as a happy kid. At the age of twelve, he found that English was very interesting. Every morning he got up at 5 a.m., and then ran to a hotel near the West Lake where he could communicate with foreign tourists in English. He did it for nine years. The experience made him become a fantastic English speaker and also opened his eyes to the wide world. In a 1995 trip to the US, Ma was shown to the Internet for the first time. Seeing the chance, Ma returned to China and set up a website without knowing much about computers. Four years later, Ma set up Alibaba in Hangzhou. People called him “Crazy Jack Ma”. But fifteen years later, Alibaba has developed into the world's largest e-commerce (电子商务) company.
