During the summer holidays, two classmates, Tom and Peter, were travelling in the desert. As they were walking, they had an argument. Tom was so angry that he beat Peter hard across-the face.
Peter felt hurt, but without saying anything, he wrote down in the sand these words, “Today my best friend Tom beat me in the face.”
It was very hot, but they kept on walking and walking until they found a river, where they decided to take a bath. Suddenly Peter got stuck in the mire (泥潭) and started getting down. Seeing that, Tom rushed over and saved him. After Peter got recovered from the danger, he wrote with a knife on a stone, “Today my best friend Tom saved my life.”
Feeling surprised, Tom, who had slapped (掌掴) and saved his best friend, asked Peter, “After I beat you, you wrote something in the sand but just now you put down what I had done on a stone. Why?”
Peter replied, "When someone hurts us, we should take it down in the sand where winds of forgiveness can blow it away. But when someone does some-thing good for us, we must carve (雕刻) it on a stone where no wind can ever do that.”
Hearing that, Tom was deeply moved. He understood what Peter had said and done.

Happiness is the only true measure (估量) of personal success. Making other people happy is the highest expression of success, but it's almost impossible to make others happy if you9 re not happy yourself. If you can make others happy, you'll be successful. Here are some pieces of advice that can help increase the amount of happiness in your life.
1 Start each day with expectation. When you rise from bed, make your first thought: “What a beautiful day it is! Something wonderful is going to happen today.” Guess what? You're probably right.
2 Take time to plan and prioritize (优先处理) things. The most common source of stress is the feeling that you've got too much work to do. Pick one thing that will make you closer to your goal in life. Then do that first.
3 Give a gift to everyone you meet. I'm not talking about a real, wrapped-up present. Your gift can be your smile, a word of thanks or encouragement, a gesture of politeness, or even a friendly nod.
4 "Turn off “background” TV, Many families leave their TVs on as “background noise” while they're doing other things. The purpose of broadcast TV is to make you dissatisfied with your life so that you'll buy more things.
5End each day with gratitude. Just before you go to bed, write down at least one wonderful thing that happened. It might be something as small as making a child laugh or something as huge as a million dollar deal. Whatever it is, be grateful for that day because it will never come again.
This is my first time in Japan. One day some new colleagues invited me to eat out. At first, I felt quite pleased and learnt to use chopsticks with them, but later the problems started.
My cold was not quite finished and my nose was still running a little so I took out a tissue (纸巾),turned away from the table and blew my nose(抠鼻涕). My colleagues, who were talking
about how to arrange (安排) the final exams of pupils, were looking at me strangely. They explained to me that in Japan, people don't blow their noses in public especially at the table.
When I was trying to stick my chopsticks in my bowl of rice, one of my colleagues said, “Don't do that. Just leave them on the table.” Later, I found that leaving your chopsticks in your rice means death in Japanese culture!
The next time I needed to blow my nose, I left the table and went to the toilet. When I returned, it was nearly time to leave. I noticed there were some little bowls of tea with lemon next to everybody's place on the table. It was hot, and I started drinking it before it got cold. Then I noticed some of my friends were covering their mouths and looking at each other. They were trying not to laugh. “What's wrong?” I asked the friend next to me. “That's not for drinking,” he explained. “It's for washing your fingers.” For a moment, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
① In the living room of your own house.

When you're not at home, many worries may start to crowd your mind. Did I turn the coffee maker off?
Did I lock the door? With a smart home, you can keep all of these worries off.
A smart home is a home with a communication network. This network connects devices (装置), such as lights and TV sets, and allows them to be controlled from far away through electrical wiring, mobile phone communication or WiFi over the Internet.
More and more people may start to consider owning a smart home, because it makes life much more convenient. It can help keep your room at a certain temperature. It can record what happens inside the home and send the video to your phone. When you are on vacation abroad, you can use a smart home controller to switch on or off the electricity when necessary. Some smart homes can receive a visitor, allowing him to come in and offering him a drink. They can even feed the cat and water the plants.
Besides, smart homes are easy to fix. Most smart home technology and devices are wireless and can be set up with a minimum of tools, using only the guiding information. When a problem appears, you can deal with it yourself without paying a professional.
However, for home-users, the smart home technology is far from perfect. It can be rather expensive to own the technology and the devices. Also, because the smart home system (系统) allows its owner to get home information from anywhere, it leaves the home easy to be attacked by hackers (黑客),who may secretly use or change the information in the system.
Now, many scientists are excited at the future of smart home technology. Imagine being able to get fashion advice from your mirror, or receive food shopping suggestions from your refrigerator, while there are others who worry that those smart devices will make people lazier and lonelier. Whatever it is, one thing is for sure — smart home technology will change the way we live and work.
