    When my father was young, he was interested in something about slavery  . Later he went to work in the oilfield  at the frontier  , where he found many workers working like slaves. They had to work for more than 14 hours a day and consumed   little. Later they went on a strike and the boss wanted to solve the problem in peace . My father was appointed as the representative   to have a talk with the boss. As a result, their working conditions were improved.

    Back in freshman year, I found myself wondering whether it should really be called "volunteering" if students only do it because they have to.

    I ended up volunteering at Weyrich Health Center, helping elderly patients with daily tasks. The more I did these tasks, the more disconnected I felt from the seniors. Though I felt bad for them, I did not want to interact with them.

    Then one rainy day, I met Colonel Hems worth. He invited me to his table and asked for some company. I regarded this as another boring task. However, when I listened to his stories, I learned that he was a brilliant war veteran(老兵), and I found his tales interesting.

    After my brief talk with Colonel, I realized that I shared common characters with all the seniors. I felt like an oxygen molecule(分子)—ready to form a relationship—rather than an isolated gas.

    I met with many learned senior citizens who shared their experiences and wisdom. No longer did I walk aimlessly down the hallways. I found myself enjoying talking with these people as I learned their histories. Why hadn't I realized sooner that volunteer work could enlighten me?

    Some people argue that volunteering and working for change does not help. However, they fail to realize that the world is constantly changing and humans must adapt. My experience at Weyrich Health Center has taught me that refusing to change one's views and accept new ones leads to short-term goals that finally disappear. Communication with others is an important part of life. Volunteering is not just a requirement or a way to improve your resume; it is a time for service and personal growth.

    Now I enjoy volunteering my time surrounded by seniors who bring history alive for me. By communicating with them, I have developed into a more dynamic person.

    John Smith was a very handsome young man but he was lazy. He had finished his education and was happy to sit in his room and listen to the radio all day long. In fact, he had been doing nothing for almost six months, which worried his father a lot. One day Mr. Smith decided that he had to do something. "John, when I was your age I was working and supporting my ten brothers and sisters. I want you to go out and get a job." So that was what he did. In fact, in the next three months, John started ten jobs and was fired from ten jobs. He explained to his father.

    "They wanted me to be at work at 8:00 a. m. and told me to do all sorts of unpleasant things."

    "I don't care how you do it," Mr. Smith said. "Either you earn some money or move out of the house. I gave you one week's time."

    In the next few days John began to change. He still stayed in his room all day, but spent his time writing letters and reading through the newspapers. More and more posts began to arrive for him. He bought a new suit for himself and invited his parents to the theatre and for dinner afterwards at the most expensive restaurant in town. When his proud parents arrived home after their evening hour, a policeman was waiting at the front door.

    "John Smith," he said as he handed him a piece of paper, "I'll see you in the court tomorrow. "

    When he got outside, John told his parents everything. "When you told me to earn some money, I decided to put an advertisement in the newspaper saying, ‘New way to money fast!Send me $5 and I'll tell you my secret. 'When I received the money I wrote back telling people to do as I do."

    John was fined $250 by the court and was ordered to pay all the people back. As he left the court house feeling very ashamed, a newspaper man came up to him, "Young man, would you like to tell your story to my newspaper for $2500?"

    A CCTV journalist succeeded in arousing a heated discussion among netizens by asking people whether they were happy. The responses to the question were various, even some quite funny ones  (include). Although people played jokes   the answers, it did not take long before they  (begin) to figure out the true meaning of happiness.

    It is certain that people's views on happiness   (affect) greatly by their own life experience. Unfortunately, too many people refer to being rich as happiness and there is no sign of a decrease in the number of those who are  (voluntary) at the mercy of wealth. Some people whose (intend) is to make big money appreciate being given any chance to multiply their income, (believe) that is where their happiness lies.     In my opinion, happiness is not about pursuing wealth merely   about admiring the beautiful things in life. Therefore, live your life   the fullest and be happy.
