"You're doing it all wrong," said Ryan.
"You're nuts!" shouted Tom. "I'm the best jumper there ever was!"
"Then why can't you touch the doorframe (门框)?"
"It's 1, okay?"
Tom looked straight up. The doorframe was ten feet high. 2 could jump high enough to touch it, even older kids. But Ryan had dared (激某人做某事) Tom that he couldn't do it, and so Tom had to 3.
He muttered, "I'm the best jumper there ever was."
It all started one day last year, a Frisbee (飞盘) was stuck in a tree. It was so 4 that nobody could get it. And Tom stood way back from the tree and got a running start. When he was going as 5 as he could run, he leapt. It was like he was in the air forever, and then he felt the Frisbee in his hand. From then on, when there was a problem that could be solved by 6, they called Tom.
Everybody 7 Ryan loved their jumping champion(冠军). 8 Tom came along, he had been the best jumper in the class. Ever since then, Ryan had been 9 the chance to take revenge(报复).
"Come on," he 10 Tom, "You can't jump just a little bit higher? I thought you were the best jumper!"
Tom gritted his teeth, tensed his legs and threw his body up into the air. And he 11 fell short by at least two feet.
"It's impossible," he said.
"Ha! I knew it."
"12 we work together."
"Excuse me?"
"Neither of us can jump high enough to touch it alone, but if we work together…" Tom 13.
A few minutes later, Tom went down on his knee and held Ryan's foot in his hands.
"One…two…three!" shouted Tom. On three, Ryan put all his 14 on Tom's hands, and Tom threw him up into the air. Ryan's hand hit the doorframe and fell down laughing.
"15 did it!" he said.
"Now it's my turn!" said Tom.
Together, they were the best jumpers there ever were.
五、阅读理解(本题有15小题,每小题2分,共计30分)(共4小题)
A PHOTO A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY
Taking a photograph each day and posting it online is a popular hobby. To study how this habit influences health, British researchers interviewed the creators of online photo magazines and discovered that daily photography improved their lives in several ways: it made them mindful of the present, it pushed them to go for walks to get their photos, and it gave them chances to communicate with people who share their interests.
THE 16:8 DIET WORKS
In a small study, researchers at the University of Illinois asked 23 fat participants(参与者) to spend 12 weeks following a type of diet called the 16:8 diet. In the eight hours between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., they could eat as much as they wanted of any food. However, for the remaining 16 hours of the day, they were allowed to have only water and other calorie-free drinks. Compared with control group, the 16:8 dieters took in about 300 fewer calories a day, lost 3 percent of their weight, and saw a great drop in their blood pressure.
10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE CAN IMPROVE MEMORY
Can't find your keys? Go for a quick walk or do a few yoga(瑜伽) poses. In a recent study, 36 healthy young adults who had just exercised for ten minutes showed improved connectivity(连通性) between the parts of the brain for new memories and the parts for detailed memory processing. The participants also improved their performance on a memory test. The researchers now plan studies in older adults to find out whether regular light exercise improves their memory as well.
My parents told me we were going camping during winter vacation. Camping! They are always trying to get me outside more. It seems like my mom is always saying, "Brian, turn off the computer!" or "Brian, put down your phone and talk to us!" They don't understand that I'm in the zone when I'm using a keyboard, so of course I don't want to stop.
We drove for an hour to Everglades National Park. As soon as we got there, I couldn't get a signal(信号) for my phone. Suddenly, I was facing three days of no contact with the outside world. My mom tried to tell me I'd like it, "You'll be able to look around more when you're not staring at a screen."
We took a hike with a ranger(护林者) in the afternoon. He explained a lot to us about the Everglades. At first, I couldn't care less, but after a while I started listening. By the end of the hike, I realized there was more action going on in the park than in most video games.
We did a lot of walking and that night I was really tired. Even so, I woke up in the midnight, and I was scared at first because of some strange sounds. But then I realized it was the barred owl that the ranger had described. It sounded like it was calling out "Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you?" Then I was not afraid anymore and went back to sleep.
The next two days we did a lot more exploring. I saw that all the land and water and animals were connected in the Everglades. Small fish eat mosquito eggs; large fish eat those smaller fish; and alligators eat the large fish. If you got rid of(除掉) the mosquitoes, you might lose some of the other animals higher up the food chain too.
After we left, we talked in the car about the Everglades. Right in the middle of our discussion, I heard a familiar sound from my phone. My friend Jeff was sending me a message. I reached for my phone, then put it back down. "Aren't you going to reply?" asked Mom.
"I will in a little while," I said. My dad and mom looked at each other and just smiled.
a. Brian heard the strange sounds of barred owl.
b. Brian learned about the food chain.
c. They discussed the camping in the car.
d. As soon as they got to the park, Brian's phone stopped working.
e. They took a hike and Brian became interested in the Everglades.
(4)Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's your online shopping! Imagine a world where your shopping was dropped off on your doorstep by a delivery (投递) drone (无人机). Well, many companies are working to make this idea a reality. Among them, Amazon and UPS are just some of the front runners in the race to have the first ever business drone delivery service.
Pros:
①Fast. Delivery drones can cut down the time of delivery to just 30 minutes.
②Environmentally friendly. Companies like UPS have started that the use of drones would cut down on waste gas (气体).
③Cheap. Though exact prices for drone delivery aren't known, companies such as Amazon suggest deliveries could be as cheap as $1.
④Emergencies. Drones can fly straight to areas they're needed without using any roads.
From Dispatch (分派) to Doorstep:
Usually products available for drone delivery will be stored somewhere nearby. Customers will choose these products through shopping apps or websites. The suggested weight to be carried is no more than 2.3 kilograms. Once the products are put into the drone, it will take off from the dispatch center. It will fly below 120m and avoid any "No Fly Zones" like airports for safety reasons. Before landing, a pad will be placed in the customer's garden for the drone's landing. After the drone puts down its product, it will rise to return to the dispatch center. So a drone delivery could one day be just a touch of an app with your finger.
Cons:
①Weather like strong winds, lightning storms and heavy rainfall may influence deliveries.
②Dispatch centers will have to be built within certain distance.
③Drones might be unable to land safely in high-rise buildings.
④Something will have to be done to make sure about the safety of the products and of people walking below.
The future of flying transportation
Though the delivery drone service is alive with new technology, we are a long way from seeing them through the air. There are still many difficulties such as flight law making. It's said that by 2021 we might see the beginning of drone delivery systems in action.
①make air less polluted
②only need to pay a little
③get your product at any place
④have to send the drone back yourself
⑤get your product in less than an hour
(1) Name | Delivery place | The product | The weather |
Tom | an airport | a sweater | windy |
Mike | a school | a book | stormy |
Jack | a house with a garden | a bottle of medicine | sunny |
Cathy | a 20-floor apartment | a fridge | cloudy |
①If you ask people what they have done with the packaging (包装材料) at home, they will almost certainly mention recycling. It is very important of course. However, if we are forced to recycle, that means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the result of that over-consumption (过度消费) in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.
②The total amount of packaging increased by 16 % between 2011 and 2018. It now makes up 1/3 of a typical household's waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays, a great number of products are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard. By doing it, supermarkets are encouraging customers to buy more than they need, which causes lots of waste.
③But it is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate(联系) packaging with quality (质量). We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food, which often has far more packaging than necessary.
④Too much packaging is doing serious harm to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. Perhaps the best way to solve the problem is not to produce such items in the first place.
⑤There are signs of hope. On one hand, a few supermarkets are coming around the idea that over-packaging should not continue. On the other hand, customers are beginning to realize how much unnecessary material is collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumption culture, but we have a mountain to climb.
