A Long long ago, there lived a king called Ralph. He had three sons. The first son was Sam. The second was John and the third was Eric. The king in his death bed wanted to test his three sons. He asked them to get together the next day in the court. The king said that he was in his death bed and wanted to test them. He asked them to fill the whole room with something, and whoever does completely can become the king. The first son brought diamonds. They filled half the room. The second son filled the room with cotton but it was not enough. The third kept a lamp in the middle of the room. It spread light in the whole room. The king loved Eric's idea very much and decided to ask him to be the king. The two sons' faces turn red as their younger brother defeated them. Then, the king died and Eric became the king.
Mr. Brown's house was less than two miles from his office, so he could drive home every day for lunch. Every time he drove home at noon, he found many cars outside his house and there was no room for his own car. He had to drive somewhere else to park his car. Then he walked back home. This made him very angry.
He put up a board in the garden facing the road. The board said, "No Parking". But nobody noticed it. People seemed to obey only a police notice with white letters on a blue board:
POLICE NOTICE
NO PARKING
Mrs. Brown asked his husband to steal a police notice but he was afraid to do so. Then she asked him to make one just like a police notice. Mr. Brown said he was not the police and couldn't use the word "police". Several days later, Mr. Brown made a blue board with white letters.
PLEASE NOTICE
NO PARKING
"Oh!" Mrs. Brown said. "You told me you weren't going to use the word ‘police', but why do you use it now?" "Really?" he asked.
"Look again," she started to laugh. "You are really clever".
New York is one of the last large American cities to have some of its policemen on horseback. The New York police have 170 horses working on certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed(喂养), but it is even more expensive to look after them. Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horse shoes. In fact, they need more than 8,000 of them each day. Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month. Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths(铁匠).There are only about thirty-five blacksmiths in the whole United States.
The cost of shoeing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job.
A blacksmith's job is not an easy one. He must be able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit(安装) it to the horse foot. The blacksmith must bend over(弯腰) all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight(重量) of the horse's leg while he works. Clearly, a blacksmith must be very strong. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses-for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift his leg.
One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948.He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city. Corbin became interested in the job of blacksmiths because his father did it, and, as he puts it, "It's a good way to make a living."

What do you think of the most important inventions in the world? The TV? The printing? The telephone? Or the computer? A report shows that they are not the only important inventions. Here are three other important inventions.
One of the simplest(最简单的) inventions is the toilet(冲水式马桶). Before toilets, waste ran into rivers from people's houses. Illnesses were common in big cities, and it was often difficult to find clean drinking water.
Animal food is another important invention. Before the invention, most animals were killed (杀死) every autumn because there was not enough food for them in winter. After hay (干草) became a kind of common animal food, animals could live through the long winter.
The third great invention is glasses. Glasses help people read, write and do "close work" after the age of forty-five. Without glasses, the world would be difficult for the people above forty-five.
