About 70,000,000 Americans are trying to lose weight. That is almost 1 out of every 3 people in the United States. Some people eat1food and they hardly have any fats or sweets. Others do running, exercise with machines, take medicine, or even have operations.2you can see losing weight is3work, and it will also cost a lot of money. But4do so many people in the United States want to lose weight? Many people in the United States worry about their look of the body. For many people, looking nice also means to be 5. Other people worry about their health as many doctors 6overweight is not good.

    Most people want to find a (an) 7way to take off fat, and books of this kind are very popular. These books tell people how to lose weight. Each year a lot of new books like these are 8. Each one says it can easily help people take fat away.

    Losing weight can be 9. Some overweight people go to health centres, like La Costa in California. Men and women 10several hundred dollars a day at these health centres. People live there for one week or two, 11exercise, eating different foods. Meals there may be just a little. All these work is for losing weight. 124 days on the programme, one woman called Mrs. Warren lost 5 pounds (2.27kg). At $ 400 a day, she spent $ 320 to lose each pound.     Nowadays many people go abroad. Then they must learn some customs about the country because different countries have different customs. In order to learn more about customs, the Culture Palace has invited some foreign speakers to give us speeches. Here is the timetable.

    You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as "a banana person"? How strange! ABC means American-born Chinese. An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a "banana person". A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a "banana", he or she is white inside, thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside, looking like a Chinese.

    Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don't speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people?  Yes, of course. They are overseas（海外的）Chinese. These people may be citizens（公民）of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair. But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People's Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang（杨振宁）. He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.

    An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only a very expensive operation could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money. When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, "Only a miracle（奇迹）can save him now." The little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully. She hurried to a store with the money in her hand. "And what do you want?" asked the salesman. "It's for my little brother," the girl answered. "He's really sick and I want to buy a miracle."

    "Pardon?" said the salesman.

    "My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my dad says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?"

    "We don't sell a miracle here, child. I'm sorry" the salesman said with a smile.

     "Listen, if it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs."

    A well-dressed man heard it and asked, "What kind of miracle does your brother need?"

    "I don't know," she answered with her eyes full of tears. "He's really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it, so I have brought all my money."

    "How much do you have?" asked the man. "$1.11, but I can try and get some more," she answered.

    "Well, what luck," smiled the man. "$ 1.11, the price of a miracle for little brother." He took up the girl's hand and said, "Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need." That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor. The operation was successful and it wasn't long before Andrew was home again. How much did the miracle cost?

    Would you like to go to another country for your summer holiday? Canada is a good       (选择). It is a wonderful country in North America. It's the second largest country in the world after Russia, What's the       (人口) of Canada in 2012? It's about 35       (百万). Canada's flag(国旗) has a maple leaf(枫叶) because there are       (大量) of maple trees in the country. Toronto is the biggest city in Canada. In Toronto you can get       (接近地) to see the CN Tower. It is 553 meters high-the tallest building in Canada. Many Canadians still live in the cold places in the       (北方). They follow more traditional ways of living.

    Canada is one of the most popular places in the world. Lots of people go there for a       (旅行) each year. There are many interesting things to see and to do. The Niagara Falls is the most       (著名的). The water falls are between the USA and Canada. The Canadian part of the falls is 49 meters high-higher and more       (令人激动的) than the American part. Lots of people around the world come to see the Niagara Falls every year.

    As we all know,       (healthy) is very important. But       can we keep fit? Firstly, we should have        good diet. That's eating more fresh fruit and vegetables, but        junk food. Drink more water instead of Coke        other unhealthy drinks. Secondly, it's good        us to take more exercise, such as running,       (walk), ball games and so on. At last, we should learn to relax       (we). We can       (listen) to some light music, chat with families or friends and have a good sleep. To keep fit is not difficult        you care it a lot.

    Walden is a quiet small town in England. Cars aren't allowed into the center of the town, so it's very enjoyable to walk around it.

There is a famous museum in Walden. It's very big, and it usually takes people at least half a day to visit the museum. It brings history to life. You can even ride a horse and cart in the streets. I was really interested in a 1950s' living room in the museum. It was just like my grandma's house when I was a child. If you can wait, you will see a new exhibition（展览）opening soon. Walden is famous for one thing—candy! If you like candy, this exhibition is the place for you to learn about its history. I never see so many kinds of candy.

    Have a look around the town of Walden while you're there. If you start in the main square and follow the green signs, they'll take you to the museum and you'll see lots of other interesting things on the way, too.
