Every year on my birthday, from the time I turned 12, a white gardenia (栀子花) was sent to my house. No card came with it. Calls to the flower shops were not helpful at all. After a while I stopped trying to find out the sender's name and I was just very pleased with the beautiful white flower in soft pink paper. But I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about the sender. My mother encouraged this imagination. She'd ask me if there was someone to whom I had done a special kindness. Perhaps it was the old man who I looked after when he was ill.  As a girl, I had more fun imagining that it might be a boy.

    One month before my graduation, my father died. I felt very sad and didn't want to go to the coming graduation dance at all. And I didn't care whether I had a new dress or not. But my mother, in her own sadness, would not let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved and lovable. In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like the gardenia—lovely, strong and perfect with perhaps a bit of mystery.

    My mother died ten days after I was married. I was 22. That was the year the gardenia stopped coming.

Almost every Chinese person can recite the two lines of the famous poem, "Every grain on the plate comes from hard work (谁知盘中餐, 粒粒皆辛苦）．”But sadly, many of us don't actually get the real meaning of these lines: Don't waste food.

A CCTV programme, News One Plus One, reported that the food Chinese people throw away every year is enough to feed 200 million people for a year.

    Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN World Food Programme, there were 925 million hungry people around the world in 2010, especially in developing countries. Six million children die of hunger every year.

Chinese people are well known for being hospitable（好客的）and generous.  Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food on the table.

    Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Last November, Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Nanjing, got fired because she took some leftover food home for her son. Many people stood by her side and criticized (批评) the waste of food.

    What should we do in our daily lives to waste less food? Here are some tips：

※Do not order too much in a restaurant. Only order as much as you want to eat. If you cannot eat all the food you ordered, take the rest of it home.

※Don't be too picky (挑剔的) about food. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it.

※Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don't buy too much, especially for vegetables and fruit.

    My family went to a restaurant for dinner one night. When we were walking to the restaurant from our car, a girl about my age and her mother c       towards us. They asked if we had any m      . The girl said there were six of them staying in an o       black car.  My mum gave them a few dollars.  Then she sent me inside the restaurant w       my dad and my three sisters. H      , my mum didn't come. Later, I found out that she had gone h       and put all the food in our cupboard into a few bags. Then she brought the food over to the car and gave the bags to the poor f      . I wasn't there when that part happened, yet I could i       the joy on their faces. After painting this picture in my mind, I understood w       my mum had done what she did that night. I will never forget this lesson in kindness from my mum.
